Calderdale Music is at the centre of music education in Calderdale, West Yorkshire. From their headquarters at The Old Courthouse in Halifax, they deliver school-based curriculum lessons within Calderdale schools, one-to-one and group instrument tuition, adult tuition, community ensembles, and live performance. As a lead partner in West Yorkshire Music Hub, they aim to ensure high-quality music education for all.
Having previously been known as Calderdale Music Trust, the company had begun the process of rebranding. As part of this process, they needed a refreshed website that would reflect their new image: bold, modern, and community-focused. Their existing website was outdated, hard to edit, and restrictive when it came to design and content presentation.
Above all, they desired a site that would:
I worked closely with the Calderdale Music team to design and build a new website from the ground up, using WordPress as a solid, flexible base.
The website was built with usability and SEO built in from the start. I created a content strategy that placed search visibility for key services like instrument lessons, school music services, and room hire in Halifax at the forefront. All pages were structured with clarity and purpose, guiding visitors through to the main actions like registering interest in lessons or making a booking.
To ensure that the site would be able to grow with the organisation, I created a variety of custom post types with distinct layouts for:
Each piece was constructed through a user-friendly, block-style editing system within the WordPress backend. Staff can now simply add and update content without having to possess technical expertise; fill in the fields, and the system automatically formats on the front-end.
Room booking is now fully bookable via the website, allowing Calderdale Music to maximise the potential of The Old Courthouse as a community and corporate events space. I also implemented an events system through which they can advertise and sell tickets for concerts and workshops, further boosting their interaction with local communities.
I wrote all of the content across the site, trying to convey the friendliness, professionalism, and inclusive spirit for which Calderdale Music is known. This content was designed to focus on a set of keywords considered important to the growth of the business. The only exceptions were obligatory copy required by law and partnership content supplied by the organisation.
To enable the site’s long-term tracking and optimisation, I implemented thorough analytics and reporting software from the outset, giving the team total visibility of user behaviour, conversion rates, and traffic streams.
The end result is a vibrant, responsive website that not only brings Calderdale Music’s rebrand to life, but actively drives their mission forward. Built with flexibility and usability at its core, the new site delivers on every level, from visual impact to performance under the hood.
The site looks and performs brilliantly on all devices, ensuring that whether a parent is browsing music lesson options on their phone, or a school head is reviewing curriculum support on a desktop, they get the same seamless experience. Every page was built with mobile-first principles, prioritising speed, accessibility, and ease of navigation across screen sizes.
Since launch, the site has seen a notable increase in enquiries for both individual tuition and ensemble participation, the two key conversion goals at the heart of the project. This uplift is a direct result of the improved SEO structure, clearer user journey, and professionally written content that speaks directly to their audiences.
Instrument lesson pages, including popular searches like piano lessons Halifax, guitar lessons Calderdale, and drum tuition West Yorkshire, now appear prominently in local search results. This improved visibility has helped Calderdale Music connect with more families and learners across the region.
One of the biggest wins for the Calderdale Music team has been the ability to manage the site confidently in-house. Non-technical staff can now add new instruments, update staff bios, post news articles, and create events, all using simple, guided forms and content fields. The custom post types and robust page templates do the heavy lifting, ensuring everything looks polished and consistent without the need for design skills or coding knowledge.
The improved visibility and usability of the site are already making a tangible difference, and the foundation has been laid for ongoing growth. Whether it’s expanding their reach with more events, promoting seasonal workshops, or offering new ensemble opportunities, the team now has the tools and digital confidence to keep things moving forward.
